Q.
What are the different types of yoga and what type of yoga do you teach at Lifesource Yoga?
A.
Lifesource Yoga in the Akron/Canton area, is an Ashtanga-based studio that teaches a variety of yoga courses, from beginner to advanced, including yoga classes for special populations such as kids, seniors, and expectant mothers. Please see below for a brief description of some of the most popular styles of yoga that will help you to demystify this ancient form of exercise and stress management.
Q.
Will yoga help me lose weight?
A.
Stress and stress hormones have been found to be a major factor in weight gain, especially in the abdominal area. Yoga can reduce tension, stress, and anxiety with breathing techniques and gentle movements. In addition, practicing yoga burns calories which can lead to weight loss. Yoga can also lead to a better self-image and the development of a healthy and positive attitude of self-acceptance.

No, it is an ancient practice of aligning the body and mind through breath and movement, but at Lifesource Yoga, we do not practice any one single type of yoga, religion, or philosophy.

Q.

Do I need to be flexible to do yoga?

A.

Nope. Every BODY is different and has a different level of flexibility, so people who are more flexible just have farther to do to reach their edge, the fine line between effort and ease. At Lifesource Yoga, we will work with you to reach your edge without going too far.

Q.

 Is yoga expensive?

A.
At Lifesource Yoga, we believe that your body benefits from doing yoga every day, so yoga should be affordable enough to do every day. That is why we offer various packages in addition to individual drop in classes, so that you can tailor a package to suit your needs.

Q.
Do I HAVE to do yoga every day?
A.
No, but your body feels great every time you do yoga, so you be the judge.

Is yoga just for women?
A.
Absolutely not. The benefits of yoga can specifically help both women and men to attain and maintain their highest level of physical and mental health.

A.

No way! Every BODY deserves the love and respect that a yoga practice brings. Yoga is about accepting our bodies the way they are today. Our Reset class is specifically designed to address the needs of our plus size yogis and yoginis as they come to enjoy the many benefits  of yoga that their bodies deserve.

Q.

A.
No, but we do offer advanced classes and Warm Yoga specifically for those who like it hot!

Types of Yoga

Hatha Yoga

Hatha, the physical practice, includes moral discipline, physical exercise (such as asanas/postures) and Pranayama (breath control), and meditation. Hatha yoga refers to the physical practice of yoga and is what most of us in the west refer to when we speak of yoga. It works to bring balance between the opposing energies of the mind and body via physical exercises, or "asanas", controlled breathing, and the calming of the mind through relaxation and meditation. The word Hatha is a compound of the words Ha and Tha meaning sun and moon in Sanskrit and represents opposing energies - hot and cold, fire and water (following the same concept
as the yin-yang), male and female, positive and negative.

Ashtanga Yoga

Ashtanga Yoga is the traditional form or root style of yoga that many other styles of flow practice, such as power yoga, come from. It is taught as a specific system with the poses in a specific sequential order. If you are working on one of the three series of the Ashtanga system, the sequence will be the same whether you are doing it in New York, California or anywhere in the world.  The style of yoga asana practice known as Ashtanga is a flow or Vinyasa style of yoga which means that you move through the series of poses at a steady pace, flowing with your breath. There are three sequences of postures in the Ashtanga yoga system: Primary Series, Intermediate Series, and Advanced Series. Some instructors choose to stray a bit from the traditional sequencing and offer variations of the series in their classes. This class is perfect for someone who wants an invigorating and challenging class.  This type of yoga can promote weight-loss while building strength, stamina, and flexibility.

Vinyasa Yoga

Vinyasa means to move with the breath. Most of the popular yoga styles, such as Ashtanga and Power Yoga, are taught in a Vinyasa style, which means that one flows through each series of poses in a fluid motion moving to the breath. These classes in the Vinyasa Flow category blend the ancient wisdom of many yogic traditions, including Ashtanga, Iyengar and Power Yoga, into a new expression. These classes offer more variety in their sequencing than a traditional Ashtanga class, are slower paced than a Power Yoga class, yet more vigorous than an Iyengar class. Vinyasa flow classes are athletic in nature and they combine hard work with deep relaxation to build strength, flexibility, concentration and a sense of balance.  This type of yoga can promote weight-loss while building strength, stamina, and flexibility.

Iyengar Yoga

Iyengar Yoga was created to prevent the pain or injury that can result from student’s straining in a yoga pose. This style of yoga uses props, such as a chair, block, blanket and belt or strap, so that the student can practice without the risk of pain or injury. Restorative yoga is a popular type of Iyengar yoga and involves a sequence of poses designed to help restore the body to a more blissful state. This type of yoga is slow paced and poses are often held for long periods of time, making it ideal for helping people recover from injury, illness or stress. It can be a very powerful tool in helping to reduce stress and restore health. Restorative yoga is synonymous to “active relaxation.” The body is supported by props so that it can be stimulated and relaxed, helping it to move toward balance.

The development of Iyengar yoga is credited to B.K.S. Iyengar, of Pune, India. Author of the contemporary classic Light on Yoga and numerous other books, Iyengar has been teaching yoga for more than sixty years. Widely recognized as a worldwide authority, he is one of the most creative teachers of yoga today.

Power Yoga

Power Yoga is a popular style of yoga in the U.S. because of the fact that it is a rigorous workout that develops strength and flexibility while keeping students moving continuously throughout the class. This is a vigorous, aerobic style of yoga that combines movement with breath (called Vinyasa) and is designed as a challenging and intense workout for both the body and the mind. Power yoga classes stress variety as they are always different. They are also designed to create fire and heat within the body and help the body’s energy to flow. This type of yoga can promote weight-loss while building strength, stamina, and flexibility.

Warm Yoga / Bikram Yoga

Warm Yoga is a style of yoga that is based on the Bikram Yoga method. It consists of a sequence of 26 yoga postures (or asanas) designed to promote flexibility and build heat in the body to cleanse it and rid it of harmful toxins. This style of yoga is typically performed in a room heated to around 90 degrees Fahrenheit. This is done for several reasons: first, the heat acts to warm the students muscles thus allowing them to get deeper into the poses, second, by warming the muscles and making them more flexible there is less risk for injury, and lastly, the heat promotes sweating which further facilitates the ridding of toxins from the body. This type of yoga can promote weight-loss while building strength, stamina, and flexibility.
